David Beckham is perhaps the most internationally known soccer player in the world after Brazil's soccer great, Pele. Beckham, who consistently played at right midfield, and eventually center midfield, is considered to be one of England's greatest and has worked continually to solidify his position in the prolific history of English soccer.
Beckham, who is currently a member of Real Madrid, has made regular appearances on the starting side of England's national team, but is perhaps best known for his time with Manchester United.
Beckham's Man U debut came in 1996, after spending time on loan from Manchester with Preston North End FC. Technically, his league debut was with the Lilywhites of Preston North End in early 1995. Beckham's brush with stardom would come playing for Manchester in 1996-97, when he netted a goal from near half-field. Beckham would become a mainstay with Manchester United through the 2002-03 season. United's most prolific achievement, during Beckham's tenure, would be winning the Treble, achieving the League, FA Cup and Champions League titles in 1999.
His time with United would be considered a golden age for the squad. Man U would take the FA Premier League title six times (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003), win the FA Cup two times (1996, 1999), win the Charity/Community Shield three times (1996, 1997 and 2003) and reign as UEFA Champions in 1999.
In addition to successes as part of the squad, Beckham would also garner his share of individual accolades, achieving runner-up for European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year in 1999, PFA Young Player of the Year in 1996 and BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2001.
Before his transfer from United to Real in 2003, Beckham would manage 237 regular season appearances, 22 FA Cup appearances and 10 League Cup Appearances. He scored 69 goals.
During his debut season in Spain, Real Madrid managed victory in the Spanish Super Cup. Since joining the Spanish club, he has made 93 appearances over three seasons and has netted ten goals.
As part of England's national squad, Beckham would eventually achieve fifth highest in international appearances for the English side, with 94 caps. Over his 94 caps, he managed 17 goals. He captained the squad for six years, making appearances in three World Cups: France 1998, Korea/ Japan in 2002, and Germany 2006.
Following a disappointing, if not lackluster, run for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Beckham resigned his captaincy and left the national side. Although Beckham has not been asked to return for qualifying matches for the European Championship in 2008, English critics and commentators suggest that Beckham's time with the national side are not over. With stiff competition in the midfield especially from Steven Gerard, Beckham would most likely appear at center midfield if he were to return.
